TMA cuts sod for market project at Tema
The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has cut the sod for a market project at Tema Manhean in the Greater Accra Region.

The project marks the commencement of work to redevelop the Tema Manhean Market. The 17-cubicle and two-storey facility is expected to be completed in six months at an estimated cost of GH¢300,000. It is being funded by the World Bank under the Urban Development Grant.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, the Metropolitan Chief Executive f(MCE) for Tema, Mr Isaac Ashai Odamttem, said the project was the first phase of major improvements that the assembly had in store for the Tema Manhean Market in particular and other markets in the metropolis.
He said Tema was once acclaimed as a model city, but sadly the prevailing situation in the metropolis was a far cry from what it was meant to be.
“Our infrastructure has deteriorated over the years, largely due to neglect,” he added.
Mr Odamttem said the government had resolved to not allow the present conditions to continue. Therefore, notwithstanding financial constraints, the assembly had decided to commence the process to modernise, expand and, in certain instances, completely overhaul the existing commercial centres and rejuvenate dormant market centres to meet present demands.
He acknowledged the role of his predecessor, Mr Kempes Ofosuware, under whose tenure the project was considered and gave the assurance that the assembly, under his stewardship, would ensure sustained development of all facets of infrastructure in the metropolis .
“What we require as an assembly is your support and assurance that each one of us will not condone fixing of illegal structures at places earmarked for development projects,” he said.

The MCE said despite the fact that Tema Manhean did not have enough land space, he was hopeful that the assembly, together with the residents, would judiciously manage what was available now and maximise their use for the benefit of both present and future generations.
Mr Odamtten appealed to residents of the metropolis to support the assembly by honouring their financial obligations in order that there would be more revenue to execute expected development projects.
The Tema Manste, Nii Adjei Krakue II, thanked the assembly for the project and advised the market women who would be allocated upon the completion of the project to ensure that they were maintained.
