TMA to rehabilitate Tema sewage systems

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has initiated a new master plan to restore the old and damaged sewer systems in the metropolis.

As part of the  project, the assembly will  undertake construction works to install equipment for the  treatment  plant  and pumping station, and repair  burst pipes  and  pavements for the easy flow of effluent  from  the main sources.

This was disclosed by the  Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive,  Mr Isaac Ashia Odamten, in an interview  at Tema.

Benefits

He said the master plan, when  implemented, would  bring to a halt the  continuous  flow of effluent into the streets and blockage of drains, which has been a nuisance and poses a health hazard  to  residents of Tema.

Mr Odamten  explained  that  Tema had, for some time, been experiencing burst sewer pipes and  flow of effluent  from individual houses  as a result of  ageing  pipes.

He said  the assembly had undertaken several repairs  on the sewer system and the time had come for a new   plan to  revamp the  entire system .

Appeal for funding support

Mr Odamten,  who commended the  Ministry for Local Government  for  supporting the  initiative, appealed to the ministry to assist the  assembly in funding the project  .

The  MCE  took the Daily Graphic round some  critical areas  which needed prompt attention, and was confident that very soon  the difficulties  of choked and burst  pipelines would  be over .

He warned residents  who had  erected  structures on the  main lines to remove them before the start of the project.

Treatment plant

On the treatment  plant , Mr Odamten  said after revamping the systems , the plant would be able to produce composite  residue  which would adequately boost organic farming  instead of the  use of fertiliser.

He explained that it will be used as  manure  since  toxic materials will be removed  after  the treatment  process.
