The awardees, who received certificates, citations and road safety items at the fourth national road safety awards ceremony in Accra yesterday, included four journalists, seven advocates and nine transport operators.

The ceremony was on the theme: “Safety transport systems, the role of commercial transport operators and the media”.

Metro Mass Transport Tops all

Metro Mass Transit received the top award of being the best commercial passenger transport operator that improved its road safety operations in 2013.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and Intercity STC were the first and second runners-up. They received certificates and road safety items.

In the solid haulage category, S. O. Frimpong Transport emerged the best operator for its road safety efforts, while Global Haulage and Frint Link Logistics were adjudged the second and first runners-up, respectively.

Three other companies in the liquid haulage industry whose contributions to road safety were recognised were J.K. Ahiadome Transport Company Limited, J. K. Haulage and S. O. Frimpong Transport.

President John Dramani Mahama, who was represented by Mr E. T. Mensah, urged transport operators not to limit their interest to profits alone but to the quality of services by employing competent drivers and continuously training them.

Road crashes

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Mrs Joyce Bawa Mogtari, who read a speech on behalf of the minister, Mrs Dzifa Aku Attivor, said, “We cannot overlook the challenges that affect the safe use of road transportation which provides 95 per cent of the nation’s transportation needs.”

She said between January and September 2013, 10,558 road crashes were recorded involving 16,242 vehicles.

Mrs May Obiri-Yeboah, the Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission, said road traffic crashes were responsible for at least six deaths a day and 2,000 deaths a year, leaving thousands injured and incapacitated.

Award winners

The national road safety awards were instituted to celebrate commercial passenger transport operators who improve their road safety operations over the year and also journalists who intensified their support in the form of preventive reporting on road safety measures.

The journalists who received certificates and Ipads included Diana Lorden Forson of GTV, Geoffrey Buta of the Ghanaian Times and Nelson Adanuti Nyadroro and Maxwell Suuk of Diamond FM.
