The two have been identified by the police as Ernest Sarfo Adu, 24, and Enoch Baah, 27.

While Adu claimed he had been recruited by a policeman, Baah told the police he got the police uniform from his brother who was a policeman.

Complants

Briefing journalists in Accra yesterday, the Kwabenya Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Ms Victoria Yamoah, said the command had been receiving complaints from motorists that some policemen had been harassing them and extorting money from them.

She said the police had since been monitoring the situation to find out if any policeman from the command was behind the claims by motorists.

Ms Yamoah said on June 28, 2016, some policemen of the Kwabenya Police Visibility Unit met Sarfo at a fuel filling station in police uniform, during which Sarfo paid compliments to the police.

She said the policemen became suspicious after observing Sarfo and noticed that he was inappropriately dressed, as he did not have a beret, while his uniform did not have a line yard, the power of authority badge and the crown.

He was subsequently arrested.

Fake recruitment

During interrogation, she said, Sarfo told the police that he had been recruited along with 80 others by a policeman he identified only as Sergeant Francis and that he had been trained in the Afram Plains.

Sarfo is said to have told the police that he paid GH¢2,500 for processing, examination and other administrative costs and was given a recruitment form and a letter of appointment.

A copy of the letter of appointment which was sighted by the Daily Graphic was dated February 28, 2016, with the address of the Ghana Police Service, Bolga, Northern Region.

The letter, which was signed by one Inspector Boakye, read: “Dear Ernest, Ghana Police Service have posted you to Bolga in the Northern Region so get prepared. We also, therefore, need you to come on this Saturday to see the place.”

Extortion from Okada

Concerning Baah, Ms Yamoah said he was arrested on July 1, 2016 when he attempted to extort money from some commercial motorbike riders, popularly referred to as Okada riders, in the area.
