The suspects were arrested during routine checks in the metropolis by the police from the Accra Central Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) for drivers with the electronic roadworthy stickers.

Detected fake stickers

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra yesterday, the MTTD Commander, Chief Superitendent Anderson Fosu-Ackaah, stated that the police detected that the stickers of the drivers were fake after passing a two-dimensional code scanner over the bar code which contained all the details of the registration.

He said the information which appeared on the scanner was differ from what was on the roadworthy stickers which caused suspicion.

The Operations Officer of the Accra Central MTTD, Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Sulemana Sulley Jnr, advised car owners to be cautious about the people they dealt with in connection with the roadworthy stickers and other documents for their vehicles.

Fake DVLA Stickers

Meanwhile, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has urged the public to be wary of persons who had started faking the electronic roadworthy stickers.

According to the DVLA, the electronic roadworthy stickers were machine readable and, therefore, anyone who acquired a roadworthy sticker from any other source apart from the approved channels, was likely to be issued with a fake sticker.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DVLA, Mr Rudolph Beckley warned that anyone found with a fake sticker would be arrested by the police and dealt with according to the law.

He explained that the availability of fake roadworthy stickers on the market meant that vehicles that were not roadworthy could ply the roads without being caught.

Donation

The DVLA donated 20 two-dimensional code scanners to the MTTD to aid it in their road checks and bring to book those who defy the law and use the fake roadworthy stickers to ensure that road accidents in the country are reduced.
