Mohammed Fuseini and Isaac Rabiu Mohammed, alias Kwasi, were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges but after full trial of the case, the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, found them guilty and sentenced them accordingly.

They were each sentenced 20 years for conspiracy and 20 years for robbery. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Pronouncing judgement, Mr Obiri said he took into consideration the fact that the convicts were young offenders and decided to give them minimum sentences.

He said it was also to serve as a deterrent to the young ones who thought robbery was a lucrative job.

Facts of the case

The prosecutor, Chief Superintendent Duuti Tuaruka, said the complainant was a student of African University College of Communication (AUCC), Adabraka Campus, Accra.

He said Fuseini (unemployed) and Mohammed (mechanic) lived at Accra New Town.

On December 13, 2013, the two young men who were riding on an unregistered Kinko motorbike forcibly tried to snatch the  complainant's handbag.

The complainant, however, resisted and she was pushed to the ground. The accused persons took the bag containing her books, purse valued GH¢c20, Techno mobile phone value at GH¢100 and an amount of GH¢50 and sped off.

Luck, however, eluded them when witnesses in the case pursued them, captured them as a result and handed them over to police for investigation, after which they were arraigned before court.
