Two suspected highway robbers shot dead in Atebubu–Ejura Police operations
Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead in separate police operations linked to a series of attacks along the Atebubu–Ejura Highway.
The deceased have been identified as Oman Amandu, also known as Manu, and another unidentified suspect believed to be part of a robbery gang that engaged police in a gun battle.
A police situational report indicated that on March 18, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m., personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters, acting on intelligence, moved to Ejura from Atebubu to arrest Osman, described as a notorious armed robber, at his hideout.
According to the report, the suspect had earlier been identified as a member of a robbery syndicate responsible for shooting into a moving vehicle on March 14, 2026, along the Atebubu–Ejura Highway, during which a passenger sustained injuries.
"During the attempted arrest, the suspect pulled out a single-barreled gun in an effort to engage the police team.
"In response, the team discharged their weapons, hitting the suspect, who fell to the ground," it said.
A search conducted on the suspect led to the retrieval of a single-barreled gun, five live cartridges, GH¢200 in cash, and a Tecno Pop 10 mobile phone.
The suspect was rushed to the Atebubu Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival by the medical officer on duty. His body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
In a separate incident on March 25, 2026, at about 11:10 p.m., PID personnel on routine patrol along the Ejura–Atebubu–Yeji Highway, specifically the Atebubu–Ejura stretch, encountered a group of about five suspected robbers near Kasei.
The report said the suspects, armed with an AK-47 rifle, single-barrel guns, sticks and machetes, signalled the unmarked police vehicle with flashlights and opened fire in an attempt to force it to stop.
The police team returned fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire during which one of the suspects was shot and fell, while the others fled into the nearby bush.
"A search conducted on the injured suspect led to the retrieval of one single-barrel gun, five live cartridges, two spent cartridges, two spent AK-47 ammunition, six live AK-47 ammunition, one Samsung smartphone, one Techno Spark 5 mobile phone, six assorted keypad phones, one machete, cash amount of GH¢310.00, one black hat, and a side bag containing coins (20 pesewas) and two (2) wristwatches."
The injured suspect was conveyed to the Atebubu Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has also been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Police say efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects who fled the scene.
