The initiative, which was put together by the Corporate Banking Department of the bank, was aimed at helping the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) to obtain its required stock of safe blood.

Prospective donors were initially screened for blood pressure and other diseases to qualify them to donate.

Reason for the exercise

The Chief Operating Officer of the Unibank, Dr Kwabena Duffuor II, said the exercise was the bank’s contribution to ensuring that the NBTS had enough and safe blood for transfusion to those who needed it.

He noted that the demand for blood in the country was higher than its supply, adding that “our attitude towards voluntary blood donation is appalling”.

Dr Duffuor said the exercise, dubbed “UNIBANK Donor Day,  would be done annually, on November 28.

For her part, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ms Dzifa Abla Gomashie, who was present, commended the bank for what she described as the bold step of making blood donation a part of its corporate social responsibility.

She urged other corporate bodies to emulate the example of Unibank, indicating that  it was also required of them to impact lives in other ways.

A Senior Blood Donor Recruitment Officer of the NBTS, Mr Steven Danso, also commended the bank for the initiative and called on other corporate bodies to do same, to help the NBTS save more lives.

He expressed disappointment that some members of the public who qualified to donate blood had made it a point never to do so.

He said blood collection was supposed to be done through 100 per cent voluntary donation but collection in the country was less than 50 per cent.

Mr Danso pointed out that there was no substitute for blood.
