The deceased, Robert Abole, 37, and a lady, whose name was given only as Elizabeth, were returning from a church service at the Fountain Gate Chapel on a motorbike when the incident occurred.

They were rushed to the Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga that same night but Robert died yesterday

According to the Upper East Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr Daniel Kwao, the Land Cruiser, with registration number GN 8925 12, and the motorbike, with registration number NR 1917 V, were both found facing the same direction when a team from MTTD visited the accident scene.

He said MTTD was investigating the matter and dispelled rumours that the deputy minister was drunk at the time of the accident. Mr Kwao also said since there was no breathalyser to test whether the minister was drunk or not, the rumours should be discarded.

"Until we conclude investigations we would not be able to say who caused the accident," he added.

He explained that there were varying eyewitness accounts so the police would have to cross-check them diligently before drawing any conclusions.

Meanwhile, a section of the youth in Bolgatanga besieged the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council yesterday to demand an explanation from the deputy regional minister.
