He made the call when he joined staff, students, parents and other invited guests at the Abor Senior High School in the Keta Municipality in the Volta Region on Saturday to commemorate the school’s Golden jubilee.

The event, which had the theme: “Provision for quality education – the role of stakeholders,” was attended by other dignitaries, including Mr Richard Quashigah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Keta, Mr Dan Abodakpi, a former MP for the area, the Regional Minister, Ms Helen Adjoa Ntoso, and some former students of the school.

Mr Amissah-Arthur called on the youth to take their studies seriously and stressed that hard work coupled with good character, could guarantee them a better future.

Describing 50 years in the life of an institution as memorable, the Vice-President said he was proud to be associated with the anniversary and urged the authorities of the school to use the occasion to critically appraise their development and challenges in the last five decades towards achieving more laurels.

Commendation

Mr Amissah-Arthur commended the founding fathers of the school for their vision to provide knowledge and skills for the development of the Abor community, adding that “it is a blessing that 50 years later, other communities are also benefiting from the investment of the labour and money of the Abor community.”

“With education, we are able to eliminate poverty, ignorance and disease that is why it is important for you students to be studious so as to be better prepared for the challenges ahead of you,” the Vice-President stated.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to provide quality education across the board, Mr Amissah-Arthur said the government had made efforts to provide the Volta Region with its fair share of infrastructure for education, including the construction of community day senior high schools.

He supported the anniversary celebration with GH¢5,000.

Headmistress’ appeal

The Headmistress of the school, Mrs Nancy Osei Goh, underscored the need for its infrastructure to be expanded, saying that the rising student population was not commensurate with the current space available.

She called on former students of the school to continue to lend a helping hand in the provision of amenities for the school to complement the government’s effort.

An appeal for funds was also launched in aid of infrastructure development.
