Heavy patronage was recorded at places such as the main lorry park, main market, Volta Regional Hospital and other public places, making the programme very successful.

As early as 5:30 a.m., hundreds of residents and staff members from the various departments in Ho, chiefs, celebrities, students and the security services had converged on the main lorry station to begin the exercise.

Personalities

Personalities who graced the occasion included the President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs and the Paramount Chief of the Asogli Traditional Area, Togbe Afede XIV, the Chief of Staff, Mr Julius Debrah, the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Doe Adjaho, the Minister of Transport, Mrs Dzifa Attivor, the Regional Minister, Ms Helen Adjoa Ntoso, and her deputy, Mr Francis Ganyaglo.

The two deputy Local Government Ministers, Nii Lante Vanderpuye and Mr Emmanuel Agyekum, led the people in the exercise which included clearing debris, clearing gutters of silt and burning rubbish.

Some Members of Parliament (MPs) and District Chief Executives (DCEs) also lent their support.

Although the people turned out in their numbers, there was, however, not much work to be done because the municipality had always remained clean. Though all shops and drinking bars were closed until 10a.m. to observe the Sanitation Day, some commercial drivers ignored the observation of the day and were at work.

In the course of the exercise, many people were seen idling with their brooms in hand without much work to do.

The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli state, Togbe Afede XIV, who addressed the large crowd at the E.P Bankoe School Park after the clean-up exercise, noted that cleanliness was part of Voltarians and, therefore, called on them to maintain that trait, as well as their support for the laudable government programme.

High turnout

The Regional Minister, Ms Ntoso, and her entourage expressed satisfaction at the turnout and thanked the chiefs for their collaboration.

She asked that the 10,000 waste bins made available to the region be placed at vantage points in the districts to help stop littering.

Ms Ntoso expressed her happiness at the level of commitment the people had shown, and said the best always came from the Volta Region.

For his part Mr Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, said, “The Ashanti Region Sanitation Day was super, the Northern Region was extraordinary but the Volta Region was magnificent.”

Other highlights of the Sanitation Day included performances by top artistes such as VVIP, Reggie Rockstone, Akosua Adjapong, Azigiza Junior and Papa Nii.
