Water companies told to produce under hygienic conditions

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has called on management bodies of sachet water companies in the country to ensure that they package water under strict hygienic conditions. According to the authority, this was to protect consumers against water-borne diseases.

The Eastern Regional Manager of the FDA, Mr George Paintsil, said the advice had become imperative in view of the outbreak of cholera in certain parts of the country and its attendant loss of lives.

He warned that any sachet water company that produced sub-standard water for the consuming public would be sanctioned according to the laws of the land.

Mr Paintsil said this at a meeting with directors of sachet water companies drawn from the Akyem Oda Zone at Oda last Friday.

He advised them to regularly change their filters and replace worn- out Ultra Violet (UV) steriliser lights, which kill germs and bacteria in order to enhance the quality of their products.

Mr Paintsil urged the managers to strive to maintain the quality of their products to keep them in business at all times since they complemented the efforts of the government in creating jobs.

He encouraged the formation of  strong associations and further urged them to adopt uniform prices for their products in order to break even, rather than allow their clientele to dictate prices of the product.

He asked them to hold regular meetings to deliberate on the progress of their companies. He also advised them to involve their clients in their meetings so they could share views, particularly on the pricing of their products.

“Take pains to check your income and expenditure in order to ascertain whether you are making gains or losses and then from there take realistic measures to address your shortcomings.

Mr Paintsil observed that some sachet water companies were on the verge of collapse due to mismanagement. He encouraged them to reverse the trend.

In an open forum, the managers of the various water-producing companies attributed most of their challenges to petty jealousy, envy and unnecessary challenges among themselves with regard to pricing of their products.

These, they contended, compelled some of the companies to sell their products at very cheap prices and that was the reason why some were not making any headway with their investments.
