Disability-friendly latrines with changing rooms will also be provided for those communities as part of the sanitation component of the project.

The beneficiary municipalities are Bolgatanga and Kassena Nankana while the districts are Kassena Nankana West, Bongo, Bawku West and Talensi Nabdam.

Inspection of projects

The Chief Executive Officer of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), Mr Clement Bugase, who disclosed this to the media after a two-day inspection tour of ongoing projects by board members of the agency, said 13 Small Town Water Supply Systems and 250 boreholes were being constructed in the Upper East Region.

He said of the 250 boreholes, 246 had been installed  while the Small Town Water Systems were at various stages of completion.

Mr Bugase expressed the commitment of the government in ensuring that majority of rural folks had access to clean drinking water.

Open defecation

The Board Chairman of the CWSA, Nana Danso Agyei II, who is also the Paramount Chief of the Abesim Traditional Area in the Brong-Ahafo Region,  advised the people to attach importance to the sanitation and hygiene component of the project since open defecation was a major problem confronting the nation.

The chairman attributed the intermittent breakdown of most Small Town Water Supply Systems to technical challenges and, therefore, tasked various Water and Sanitation Management Teams to adopt strategies to sustain the facilities.
