He said the decision to site the proposed Eastern Regional University in Somanya and other related initiatives were a testament to the effort to drive educational development in the area to greater heights adding that the government plans to make Kroboland a citadel of education.

President Mahama stated this at a durbar held in his honour by the Manya Krobo Traditional Council at Odumase at the start of his three-day ‘Accounting to the People’ tour of the Eastern Region yesterday.

The President is expected to perform a number of activities, including the inspection and inauguration of development projects, in the region.

President Mahama said the university, when established, would help the people of Kroboland acquire farming skills, since majority of the people were farmers.

Development projects

He mentioned some ongoing development projects in the Manya Krobo Traditional Area, including an assembly hall complex at the Krobo Girls’ Senior High School (SHS), two girls’ dormitories at Akro SHS, a two-storey boys’ dormitory at Manya Krobo SHS,  as evidence that he had given the area its fair share of the national cake.

Touching on roads, the President recalled that during the 2012 electioneering, chiefs in the area had made a request for the improvement of their road network.

He said that request had been met substantially, mentioning the Odumase-Oterkpolu, Akuse-Okwenya, Trom-Kpong and Asitey town roads as some of the roads that had been rehabilitated.

He assured the people that the government would never take the support of Kroboland for granted but would continue to fulfill its promises to them.

President Mahama said efforts were being made to connect a number of communities, especially those in the Upper Manya District, to the national electricity grid.

Economic challenges

He said in spite of the economic challenges that confronted the country in the last four years, the government made strides in infrastructure development which provided jobs for the youth.

He said in its next term of four years, the government would put emphasis on income generation and skills acquisition.

President Mahama appealed to the people to continue to support him to enable him to carry through his vision for Kroboland.

Voters registration

He advised Ghanaians who qualify as voters to take advantage of the limited voters registration exercise scheduled for April 28 to May 8 to register to enable them to exercise their franchise in this year’s general election.

He, however, cautioned those who already had their names in the voters register against attempting to register again, since that would be an electoral offence.

Gratitude

The acting President of the Manya Krobo Traditional Council, Nene Agbau Narh III, expressed gratitude to the government for what he described as massive educational infrastructure in the traditional area.

He, however, appealed to the government to complete ongoing projects in the area.

At Kpong, President Mahama, who was given a rousing welcome, briefly interacted with traders and urged them to continue to have confidence in his government.
