Western Region: 6 arrested including 3 Chinese nationals over murder at galamsey site
The Western Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects, including three Chinese nationals, in connection with a shooting death at an illegal mining (galamsey) site at Gwira Ampanise in the Nzema East District.
The deceased, 45-year-old Angu Mensah, who was the Abusuapanyi of Gwira Ampanise, was shot in the chest during a misunderstanding at the site on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
Police have identified the six suspects as Hamza Abubakar, 36; Hamidu Seidu, 42; Francis Biewose, 26; Bai Yaozheng, 36; Liu Gang, 43; and Wen Xien Wen, 45. All six are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
According to a statement signed by Superintendent Olivia Etu Adiku, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the Western Regional Command, police at Axim received a distress call at about 1320 hours on Sunday reporting a shooting incident at a mining site. A team of officers, together with the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, proceeded to the scene immediately.
Preliminary investigations revealed that at approximately 1145 hours, a misunderstanding erupted between the deceased and some individuals at the site. During the altercation, one Alfred Sadick, also known as Strongman, allegedly produced a weapon and shot Mensah in the chest.
Efforts are underway to apprehend the prime suspect, Alfred Sadick, who remains at large. Police have appealed to the public for any credible information that could lead to his arrest.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The Western Regional Police Command is urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspect known as Strongman to contact the Regional Police Command or the Axim Police station immediately.
