Western Region: Five perish in galamsey disaster

Five illegal miners have perished in the latest galamsey disaster in the Prestea Huni-Valley District of the Western Region Thursday evening after they sneaked in to the deep of the Adonae Forest Reserve near Bawdie to mine.

The dead, who are migrant miners are yet to be identified.

Their bodies have since been deposited at the Prestea Government Hospital Morgue while police continue their investigations.

According the Prestea Huni-Valley District Police Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Emmanuel Nwinsori, due to the clampdown on the illegal mining activities, some miners have relocated into the deeper parts of the forest reserves. 

He said the current accident involved six illegal miners, however, one of them was rescued and was currently on admission at the Prestea Government Hospital.

The crime officer expressed the hope that the sixth person on admission would recover to help identify the dead.
