The units are the Regional Environmental Health And Sanitation Unit of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and the Disease Control Unit of the Ghana Health Service.

The move, according to the Head of the regional health and sanitation unit, Mr Henry Bagah, is to prevent the possible outbreak of diseases across the region.

Considering the increasing incidence of cholera cases in some parts of the country, Mr Bagah said it was important that the respective institutions teamed up to work to ward off houseflies, which are the main vectors that cause cholera.

To this end, he said, there were ongoing intensive radio discussions, education and massive information dissemination to reach out to the people in the region.

He emphasised the need for attitudinal change and the adoption of best sanitation practices in the region and appealed to the people to avoid open defecation and keep their environment clean.

The Regional Vector Control Officer of Zoomlion, Mr Ezekiel Ayamga, highlighted measures that individuals and the communities could adopt to prevent the breeding of houseflies.

“Dispose of organic and decayed materials in tightly covered dust bins, do away with decayed waste or dead animals and keep all compost buckets and bins covered,” Mr Ayamga advised.

He said if those measures were seriously taken, the incidence of cholera that hit other parts of the country could be prevented in the region.

He stressed that Zoomlion was determined to keep the region clean at all times and advised the people to desist from defecating and throwing human excreta into dust bins and drains and take personal hygiene seriously.
