Special beds for KATH Paediatric Intensive Care Unit

The establishment of an eight-bed Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in February this year, has helped save the lives of over 58 children.

According to the Head of the Department of Child Health of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Prof. Emmanuel Addo-Yobo, the facility, the only one in West Africa, was overstretched and needed a lot of resources and facilities to cater for the ever-increasing paediatric cases that came to the hospital.

Prof. Addo-Yobo disclosed this to the media when Toyota Ghana Company Limited donated two specialised PICU beds to the hospital in Kumasi.

The PICU is a specialised unit within a hospital, that caters for critically ill infants children, and teenagers.

The Unit usually directed by one or more paediatric intensivists or PICU consultants and staffed by doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists who are specially trained and experienced in paediatric intensive care.

Special characteristics

The paediatric intensive care bed is modelled with special characteristics to meet the health needs of infants aged zero to four and enhances the effectiveness of therapeutic treatment.

The transparent side rails with head and foot boards, protect the child and permit continuous patient supervision.

This unique product is particularly suited for paediatric clinics, working at the forefront of treating the critically ill patient.

Prof. Addo-Yobo, urged corporate entities and other organisations to support the hospital to expand the unit and also establish a Paediatric Emergency Unit (PEU) to cater for emergency cases among children above 13 years.He commended Toyota Ghana company for its support.

Presenting the beds, the Kumasi Branch Manager of Toyota Ghana Limited, Mr Peter Asante, said his company believed that a healthy environment contributed to a healthy well-being and it was for that reason that they made the presentation to the hospital.
