Stakeholders urged to support healthcare excellence

The Ashaiman Municipal Hospital has marked its 50th anniversary, celebrating its transformation from a modest health post into a key healthcare facility serving thousands of residents in the municipality and surrounding communities.

The celebration was themed “50 Years of Excellence in Healthcare — celebrating our legacy, transforming the future.”

In her welcoming address, the Medical Superintendent, Dr Mavis Amoako, recounted the hospital’s journey and growth over the decades.

She explained that the hospital, which initially provided only first aid and referral services, now operates as a 73-bed facility offering specialised services in obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, neonatal intensive care, family medicine and public health.

She said the facility also serves as a referral centre for Kpone-Katamanso and other communities, including Klagon, Kubekrom, Oyibi and Afienya.

Access

Dr Mrs Amoako said the golden jubilee milestone signified improved access to healthcare for residents and greater professional fulfilment for staff.

She announced that the hospital had been earmarked to become a district blood collection centre, a move expected to help address frequent blood shortages in the municipality.

Dr Mrs Amoako expressed gratitude to the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, the Member of Parliament, Dr Enerst Norgbey, the Ashaiman Traditional Council and partners, including the World

Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF, MTN and other stakeholders, for their continuous support in infrastructure and logistics.

“Our goal is to become the centre of excellence that Ashaiman deserves,” she said.

High performance

The Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Robert Amesiya, commended management and staff for their dedication, describing Ashaiman as one of the region’s most dynamic and high-performing hospitals.

“This hospital is highly utilised and your service output compares to facilities with over 100 beds. That speaks volumes about your commitment and efficiency,” he said.

Dr Amesiya urged the hospital staff to communicate openly with the community to build trust and improve service delivery.

“Sometimes, communities do not appreciate our efforts, not because they don’t care, but because we don’t communicate enough. Every client who walks through these doors should be welcomed with a smile,” he advised.

He also reminded health workers to uphold the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Code of Conduct, emphasising professionalism, teamwork and respect in patient care.

Commitment

The Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Dr Ernest Norgbey, reaffirmed his commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the municipality.

He announced plans to construct a two-storey maternity block at the Community 22 Polyclinic and complete a dialysis centre he is personally funding at the Ashaiman Municipal Hospital.

Dr Norgbey also pledged to push for the commencement and completion of the Agenda 111 hospital project in the area and improve roads linking health facilities.

He commended hospital staff for their dedication despite challenges and assured that workers’ welfare remains a key priority in his development agenda.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ashaiman, Freeman Tsekpo, credited the transformation of the facility from a small health post in 1975 to a municipal hospital in 2024, to the dedication of staff, the support of successive Members of Parliament and the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly.

The MCE noted that new wards, a maternity block, an operating theatre, and additional hospital beds had been provided under the assembly's leadership.

Mr Tsekpo praised the MP for Ashaiman for renovating the maternity block, donating 30 beds and initiating the construction of a dialysis and emergency centre.

He reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to investing in infrastructure, training and staff welfare, while urging residents to protect and promote the facility for future generations.
