President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated Ghana’s commitment to sustaining efforts aimed at achieving the global target of ending HIV/AIDS by 2030.
He gave the assurance when the Executive Director of UNAIDS, Winnie Byanyima, paid a courtesy call on him.
President Mahama stressed that Ghana has secured alternative funding sources to cover the gap created by the withdrawal of PEPFAR support, stressing that this is crucial to maintaining progress made in the national HIV response.
He described the increasing infection rate among young girls and women as deeply worrying and highlighted the need for intensified interventions to protect the most vulnerable.
The President added that, alongside the government’s initiatives, the First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Mahama, continues to work with the Ghana AIDS Commission on advocacy programmes focused on prevention, stigma reduction, treatment support, and reintegration of persons living with HIV.
President Mahama agreed with the UNAIDS Executive Director on the need for a strong global HIV response, noting that renewed international cooperation is essential to prevent the reversal of decades of progress.
