The initiative, a collaboration between Ghana and Norway, has the objective of boosting healthcare delivery in the participating countries.

As part of the collaboration, the Ghana Society for Medical Physics (GSMP) is facilitating a Ghana-Norway Summer School in Accra.

The five-day programme, hosted by the Korle Bu-Teaching Hospital, is the first to be organised by the GSMP in collaboration with the Radiation Protection Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC).

Other collaborators include the Medical Physics Department of the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Health Services of the University of Ghana.

Over 50 participants, including medical physicists, radiographers, biomedical engineers and students from Ghana, Malawi and Niger are attending the programme.

A team of lecturers, led by Professor Pal Erik Goa from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and St. Olav's University Hospital, Trondheim, Norway, are facilitating the programme.

Significance

A Professor at the Department of Applied Physics, University for Development Studies, Prof. John Justice Kodjo Fletcher, said the training was to strengthen the knowledge and experience of young Ghanaian scientists in the techniques and methods used to obtain images of the body organs in order to ensure early diagnosis of cancer and other diseases to ensure their early treatment.

For his part, Prof.  Goa said the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and St. Olav's University Hospital bought into the idea because it would offer a platform for the two countries to exchange ideas in their fields to improve the practice of medical physics and radiology in both countries.
