Second separated Siamese twin also dies

All two Siamese twins who were separated Tuesday after a marathon surgical operation at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi have died.

The first of the twins died Wednesday night from a hole in heart condition whiles the second one also died Thursday morning.

The twins were in critical condition after the surgery and were kept at the Intensive Care Unit.

Their survival rate was pegged at 30 percent.

The second twin had been in critical condition after her sister passed Wednesday night.

It took a team of 17 medical officers and nurses at the hospital to successfully carry out the delicate surgical operation to separate the female Siamese twins who were joined at the abdomen on Tuesday.

They were also joined at the pelvis and intestines, a development which made their separation very delicate.

The surgical operation was the second to be undertaken at KATH in 12 years.

In 2001, a medical team, led by the late Professor Amon Niquaye and Professor Abantanga, carried out the first successful separation of Siamese twins.

On Tueday, the doctors said the nature of the operation needed God’s guidance.

The Siamese twins were born three months ago but were not in stable condition to enable medical officers to carry out the surgical operation at that time, hence the delay .

The news of the birth of the Siamese twins was first carried by Accra based radio station Joy FM, which called for public support for the mother of the twins to raise funds for the operation.

The MTN  Foundation responded by donating GH¢20,000, while an appeal by the radio station also raised GH¢12,000.
