Metropolitan
A statement issued and signed by the sector minister, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah dated November 7, 2024, named the two municipal assemblies and a district that have been elevated to the metropolitan status as the Kpone Katamanso Municipality in the Greater Accra Region, the Techiman Municipality in the Bono East Region and the Gomoa East District in the Central Region.
Municipal
It mentioned the 12 district assemblies that have been upgraded into municipalities are the South Tongu and Anloga district assemblies in the Volta Region; the Bole District Assembly in the Savannah Region, the Afigya Kwabre South, Atwima Kwanwoma, Atwima Nwabiagya North, Obuasi East and Sekyere South district assemblies all in the Ashanti Region; the Ningo Prampram District Assembly in the Greater Accra Region; the Shama District Assembly in the Western Region; the Techiman North and Pru East district assemblies in the Bono East Region.
The statement said the upgrades would become fully effective upon completing all legal and administrative requirements.
Others for consideration
Further to this restructuring, the ministry noted that requests for the elevation of the Ho Municipality to Metropolitan status, as well as proposals to upgrade the Offinso North and Birim North districts to municipalities, are currently under review. Additionally, various petitions for the creation of new districts are being considered.
The statement said the elevation of these assemblies aimed to improve local governance and strengthen administrative capacity, aligning with the government’s commitment to decentralisation and development across Ghana.
