2024 Election: Bawumia committed to NPP’s record, not distancing himself – Assibey-Yeboah

The Chairman of the Economic Sub-Committee for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) manifesto, Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah has defended the party’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, against claims that he is distancing himself from the government’s record.

This clarification follows criticisms after Dr. Bawumia referred to himself as a “driver’s mate” during a recent address, asking Ghanaians to give him the chance to fully take the “wheel.”

Some interpreted this as an attempt to separate himself from the administration's record amid Ghana’s current economic challenges.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View show, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah affirmed that Dr. Bawumia remains fully committed to the NPP’s legacy and achievements over the past seven and a half years.

“Bawumia is not running away from the NPP’s record. In fact, he has outlined what we have achieved and takes full responsibility. When we put the NPP’s record next to the NDC’s, it’s clear where the progress lies,” he explained, stressing that the party’s development initiatives and social interventions have had a positive impact on Ghanaians.

Dr. Assibey-Yeboah further noted the widespread enthusiasm he has witnessed during his visits across the country, particularly among young people who are set to vote for the first time.

“There are a lot of youth excited about the opportunity to vote for the NPP, especially those who have benefited from the Free SHS programme and other policies,” he said.

Addressing economic concerns, Assibey-Yeboah noted that Dr. Bawumia intends to focus on providing solutions to the economic issues the country faces, particularly through continued improvements in economic management following December 2022.

“Bawumia has solutions for the next phase. Post-December 2022, economic management has improved, and we are on a better path,” he assured.

Dr. Bawumia, if elected, has committed to advancing economic recovery and stability as the NPP seeks a new mandate from Ghanaians in the 2024 election.
