Grant Afoko, Agyapong immediate access to party headquarters - Akufo-Addo

Mr Paul Afoko and Mr Kwabena Agyapong have been denied access to the party headquarters by a group calling itself the ‘Invisible Forces’ for the second straight week, following the murder of the Upper East regional chairman of the party, Mr Adams Mahama, via an acid attack. Mr Afoko and Agyapong have rebuffed persistent calls for them to step aside by party members who accuse them of culpability in Mr Mahama’s death.

Commenting on the development in a press conference in Accra Friday, Mr Akufo-Addo called for an immediate end to what he described as “the finger pointing, name calling, the insults, the lies and denigrating” of party officials.

He said as flagbearer, he would not “tolerate chaos within our party."

"I will not tolerate chaos within our party. The recriminations against ourselves in this period of healing, I repeat, must stop," he said

"The NPP way of doing things is to be guided by law and order and I ask that normalcy return to our headquarters and party offices. I ask that we extend mutual respect to each other and we listen to each other," he added.

He urged party members to allow the police to carry out investigations into the death of Mr Mahama, whom he described as “a passionate party man”.

The former Attorney-General called on law enforcement agencies to “ bring a quick resolution to the despicable criminal act that took place in Bolgatanga  two weeks ago”.

He expressed gratitiude to President John Mahama for pledging to bring the killers to book, stressing that the NPP will hold the President to his promise.

“We shall not be satisfied with anything less than the arrest and successful prosecution of the killers of chairman Adams. There should be no ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’,” he emphasised.

Mr Akufo-Addo echoed concerns by some political analysts to the effect that continued infighting within the party will derail the party's ambition to win political power in 2016.

According to him, terror recriminations within the NPP will only benefit the National Democratic Congress, which he said had failed Ghanaians.

“The people of Ghana look to us to rescue our nation. We dare not jeopardise this sacred trust” he stressed.

The flagbearer expressed confidence that the NPP will overcome the current challenge.

“The NPP is not the first party to face crisis and the NPP will not be the last party to come out of its crisis stronger. I want to assure you. I am confident of our capacity to overcome and we shall overcome. ” he said.
