Mr Sorfor Azorka, who until the election last Saturday was the acting Northern Regional Chairman of the NDC, polled 246 votes to beat off competition from four other contestants, who together polled 90 votes.

Other elected executive members were Mr Joseph Amuzu Ngmangnag, Vice Chairman, Mr Salisu Be-awuribe Issifu, Deputy Secretary, Mr Godfred Wumbei, Organiser, Alhaji Osman Musah, Deputy Organiser and Alhaji Mohammed Amin Baba, Deputy Treasurer.

The rest were Mr Adam Mohammed Aminu, Youth Organiser, Mr Abdul Mumin Abdul-Karim, Deputy Youth Organiser, Mr Abdul Mumin Alhassan Fuseini, Propaganda Secretary, Mr Dramani Bukari Ecomog, Deputy Propaganda Secretary, while Madam Olivia Hawa Yahaya went unopposed as Women’s Organiser and Hajia Abiba Kassim Baby and Hajia Mohammed Martha also ran unopposed as Deputy Women’s Organisers.

The elections were supervised by the Northern Regional Office of the Electoral Commission led by its Director, Mr Bruce Ayisi, amid heavy security at the congress grounds.

The elections for the positions of regional secretary and regional treasurer were postponed following a court injunction secured by one of the applicants who was disqualified from contesting as the regional secretary.

Mohammed Aliu, the disqualified regional secretary aspirant, accused the NDC’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, of deliberately disqualifying him to favour a preferred candidate.

He also criticised the NDC leadership for organising the vetting in the region amid heavy military presence.

The NDC’s constituency elections also faced similar court cases.

About 348 delegates from 31 constituencies took part in the exercise.

Prior to the congress, the NDC on Friday elected its Northern Regional youth organiser.

The incumbent Regional Organiser, Adam Mohammed Amin Abio, retained his position when he pulled 62 votes out of the total votes cast.

Meanwhile, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the NDC, had sworn the newly-elected executive members into office.

Mohammed Aliu dragged the party to court to seek an injunction on the regional congress, claiming he was unfairly disqualified from contesting the party’s regional secretary position.

However, the Northern Regional election committee of the party went ahead with its planned regional congress to elect some executive members.
