Bryan Acheampong rallies NPP base, declares ambition for 2028 flagbearership

The Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, has declared his intention to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 elections, issuing a rousing call for unity and discipline as the party gears up for a comeback.

Speaking at the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference in Kumasi, Dr Acheampong said: “I’m not here to test the waters. I’m here for power.” His declaration was met with applause from the party’s grassroots leaders.

Recounting his journey from a party canvasser to Member of Parliament and cabinet Minister, Dr Acheampong underscored his longstanding commitment to the party’s ideals. He reminded delegates that he had never sought positions for personal glory but had worked diligently behind the scenes to serve the NPP and the nation.

“I have served this party from the ground up. My work speaks for itself, and today I come before you not for validation, but to lead,” he said. “Our mission in 2028 is clear: unite the NPP and return to power with a renewed sense of purpose.”

The NPP has officially set January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 elections.

The contest is expected to be hotly contested, with former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, and former Essikado-Ketan MP Joe Ghartey already tipped as potential contenders.

The decision to open nominations and fix the date was taken by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) following a meeting on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The upcoming primary will mark a turning point for the NPP as it strategises for a return to power after its 2024 electoral defeat.

Dr Acheampong concluded his address by calling for a disciplined campaign focused on unity and vision rather than personal attacks and divisive tactics. “We need all hands on deck. This is not just about one man’s ambition. This is about the soul and future of the New Patriotic Party,” he said.
