Mr Paul Afoko

Court dismisses Afoko's move to stop NPP's extraordinary confab

The Human Rights High Court Friday dismissed an application for an interim injunction filed by Mr Paul Afoko to stop the national delegates’ conference of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from removing him from office as chairman of the party.

This was after lawyers for the NPP had argued that the extraordinary delegates’ conference of the party had nothing to do with Mr Afoko.

Mr Afoko had filed the suit claiming the party's extraordinary conference was aimed at removing him from office as the duly elected national chairman of the party.

But dismissing the application, the presiding judge, Justice Anthony Yeboah said lawyers for Mr Afoko ought to have proved that there would be irreparable damage caused to him if the conference went ahead but had failed to do so.

Justice Yeboah said that in any case, Mr Afoko could still challenge his removal, just as he was doing in the case of his suspension, if the party went ahead to remove him at the conference.

He further added that organizing an event such as what the party was doing came at a great cost and therefore restraining it would lead to a financial loss to the party.
