Enthusiastic gathering at PPP convention

The Ghana International Trade Fair Centre, the venue for the third National Convention of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) last Saturday saw a charged atmosphere characterised by the draping of the premises with the red and white colours of the party.

Economic activities were rife at the main entrance to Pavilion B of the Trade Fair Site as people were busy selling all kinds of the party’s paraphernalia to patrons.

One other key feature of the convention was the number of female attendees who seemed to outnumber the male attendees.

Also, the sale of miniature vuvuzela was the order of the day as the salesperson moved through the gathering selling each at  GH¢5.

The vuvuzelas added to the joyous occasion as if the party had already won the November 7 elections as they caused jolts of excitement, especially during the delivery of speeches by speakers.

The National Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nii Brew Allotey Hammond, said the party was battle-ready to win the 2016 election.

Nii Brew Hammond indicated that the party had, therefore, set up a team for the successful prosecution of its agenda.

Addressing delegates and party supporters who converged on the venue, Nii Brew Hammond said the PPP would offer solutions to the socio-economic and political challenges facing the nation.

Positive reforms

The congress unanimously adopted the 2016 Policy Statement of the party.

Mr Hammond said the party was ready and capable of forming the next government to restructure the economy and institutions to enable them to deliver and alleviate the economic and other challenges confronting the country.

He said the PPP would reform state institutions and make government efficient, as well as raise the needed revenue for development.

According to the national chairman, the party, when voted into power, would work to amend portions of the Constitution to abolish the provision that allowed ministers of state to also serve as Members of Parliament.

He explained that such a move, would make available for governance, a large pool of qualified experienced talents whose expertise remained currently unused and wasted.

Separation of powers

The party, he said, would also resource Parliament to enable it to function effectively and efficiently, ensure the principle of separation of powers and also reduce the number of ministers of state and rely on professional civil servants to ensure an efficient administration.

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the party, Mr Mike Eghan Jnr, said the congress was to confirm the party’s participation in the 2016 elections and asked the delegates and supporters to preach the party’s policy and message in order to convince the electorate to vote for the party.

For his part, the National Secretary of the party, Mr Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, said if there was any singular name among the presidential hopefuls, it was Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom who could be trusted and relied on for the change the country was yearning for.

Solidarity messages

The Women’s Coordinator of the party, Ms Belinda Bulley, said the PPP would fulfill its promises as espoused in its manifesto and the policy statement.

In a solidarity message, an Independent Presidential Candidate in the 2012 elections, Mr Joseph Osei Yeboah, aka JOY,  described Dr Nduom as the most credible candidate among the other contestants due to his track record of incorruptible leadership and business acumen in creating jobs for the teeming unemployed Ghanaians.

He asked Ghanaians to discard the notion that if they did not vote for either the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or the New Patriotic Party (NPP), they would have wasted their votes and cast their ballots for Dr Nduom as the alternative leader to solve the challenges of the country.

Ms Susana Amankwaa, Second Vice-Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party, who delivered a message from the party, wished the PPP well in its endeavours.
