The two institutions were confident of the ability of the Chairperson to steer the affairs of the EC to enable the commission to deliver its mandate to the good people of Ghana.

In a statement signed by Mrs Juliana Owusu Ansah, Headmistress, Ghana National College, and Mr Ben Odai, National President of the old students association of the College, said that “Mrs Osei’s appointment, the first of its kind in our nation’s history, is a vindication of the vision of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the founder of Ghana National College, that the school remain a co-educational institution aimed at training the youth of this country with patriotism as a sign post.”
Mrs Charlotte Osei is an old student of the college.

According to the statement, it was their expectation that the selflessness and patriotic loft of the youth of the Gold Coast, which resulted in the foundation of the Ghana National College, will further inspire Mrs Osei to excel in her duties as the chairperson of the EC.

The statement recalled with pride young Charlotte’s days as a student of the college and the fact that she applied herself deligently to her studies.
“We have no doubt in Mrs Osei’s capabilities to excel in her new position, having already gained valuable experience in both the private and the public sectors of our country,” it stated.

Relatedly, a statement, signed by Dr Vladimir Antwi Danso, Ag. Executive Director of the CLGA, said the centre was very pleased with her appointment as EC Chairperson.
The statement also commended the Government and the Council of State for the bold step in making competence a priority in the appointment.

In welcoming the new EC boss, the centre drew the attention of the Chairperson to experiences from the 2010 District Level Elections, which needed to be avoided in the upcoming September 1, 2015 District Assembly and Unit Committee elections.

The EC, according to the centre, is also being cautioned to put in place adequate systems to prevent unnecessary prolonging of the elections beyond September 1, in what became known as organising them “tot by tot” during the 2010 elections. In line with this it advised the EC to make sure election materials and other logistics were sent to polling stations on time to enhance the smooth running of the elections.

“The EC is once again reminded of the growing politicisation of campaign processes of District Assembly Elections and must, as a matter of urgency, take bold steps to curb this unpleasant situation,” it stressed.
