Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly inaugurated
The Seventh Assembly of the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly (LMKMA) in the Eastern Region was inaugurated last Wednesday at Odumase-Krobo with a call on the assembly members to continue to support the municipal chief executive in his quest to render better services to the people in the municipality and to a larger extent, develop the country.
Thirty-one elected assembly members and 14 government appointees were sworn in.
The Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for New Juaben North, Mr Agyei Kwasi Boateng, who inaugurated the assembly on behalf of the Local Government Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama, said the election and appointment of the assembly members was a mark of confidence and trust the people had in them and the assembly members were, therefore, expected to live up to expectation in undertaking their responsibilities to the people.
Duties of assembly members
The Deputy Minister said the government remained poised to deepen popular participation at the local level, adding that “our target to ensure election of metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives on partisan bases is right on course”.
He said nationwide sensitisation to the election was being conducted and meetings held with Electoral Commission (EC) and National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), and the draft bill to review Article 55(3) of the Constitution had received approvals from Cabinet and Parliament.
Success of assembly
The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Eric Kwakye Darfour, advised the assembly members not to interfere in the day-to-day administrative functions of the assembly as that created problems.
The Konor of Manya Krobo, Nene Sakite II, said even though the assembly was responsible for the welfare of the people in the municipality at the grass roots, many a time the assembly isolated itself from the people, hence information on projects and finance was hidden from the people, particularly the Manya Krobo Traditional Council.
In his welcome address, the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Simon Kweku Tetteh, thanked the old assembly members, the traditional authorities and other opinion leaders for their cooperation and support during the sixth assembly period.
Mr Benjamin Awulley Mensah was re-elected as the Presiding Member of the new assembly.
The members were sworn in by Mr Francis Gbedzro, the Odumase-Krobo Circuit Court Judge.
