Mahama nominates Dr. Omane Boamah as Defence Minister-designate

President John Dramani Mahama has named Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah as Defence Minister designate in his latest ministerial nominations.

Dr Omane Boamah brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served in various capacities within previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administrations.

He was the NDC’s Director of Elections in the 2024 elections, a testament to his organisational acumen and strategic vision.

Career in Public Service

Dr Omane Boamah served as Minister of Communications during President Mahama’s first term, where he oversaw advancements in Ghana’s telecommunications and digital policy framework.

Before this, he was Deputy Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, where he led investigations into major environmental incidents, including the spillage of low-toxicity oil-based mud by KOSMOS Energy in the Jubilee Offshore Field and a sodium cyanide spillage by Newmont Ghana Gold Limited.

As Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Dr Omane Boamah was instrumental in coordinating Ghana’s participation in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Background

A medical doctor by training, Dr Omane Boamah graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School and completed a medical elective at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. He also holds a Master’s degree in Health Policy Planning and Financing from the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

As a student, he demonstrated strong leadership as the President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and Coordinating Secretary of the Federation of Ghana Medical Students Association (FGMSA).

Strategic appointment

In addition to his ministerial experience, Dr Omane Boamah served as Spokesperson to President Mahama from 2014 to 2017, where he was a key figure in government communications and public engagement.

The Defence Ministry is a critical portfolio in Ghana’s governance, responsible for national security, military modernisation, and the welfare of armed forces personnel. Dr Omane Boamah’s multifaceted expertise in leadership, communication, and policy development positions him as a strong candidate to lead this vital ministry.

The nomination will be subject to parliamentary approval. If confirmed, Dr Omane Boamah will be tasked with overseeing Ghana’s defence strategy at a time of evolving security challenges in the region.

Dr Omane Boamah is an alumnus of Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary in Koforidua. He has also served as Vice Chairman of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UNCSTD).
