NPP National Women’s Organiser race: Survey shows strong delegate backing for Hawa Koomson
Although the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has slated its national executive elections for September this year, the race for the National Women’s Organiser position is generating interest among members and sympathisers of the party.
The national executive polls form part of the party’s broader reorganisation agenda aimed at strengthening its structures ahead of the 2028 general election.
However, a new internal survey conducted by Apex Intelligence and Innovation Insights, a research institution, indicated that a former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was in a strong position in the race for the party’s National Women’s Organiser slot.
The poll, conducted between March 11 and 22, 2026, found that 65.5 per cent of delegates sampled supported Mrs Koomson’s candidature, while her closest contender, former Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Catherine Ablema Afeku, secured 14.2 per cent.
According to the survey, Mrs Koomson, who is also a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya East in the Central Region, enjoys strong support across key demographic groups within the party.
Regionally, Mrs Koomson recorded some of her strongest performances in Bono East (88 per cent), North East (80 per cent), Central (75 per cent), Oti (73.1 per cent), Upper East (70.7 per cent) and Ashanti (69.4 per cent) regions.
Mrs Afeku, who is also a former MP for Evalue-Adwira-Ajomoro, however, performed comparatively better in the Western North Region, where she secured 35 per cent support against Mrs Koomson’s 50 per cent. She also registered relatively stronger support in parts of the Western Region.
Despite those gains, the survey pointed to a significant nationwide lead for Mrs Koomson.
The survey sampled 871 delegates from all 16 regions using a stratified random sampling method. Respondents included national, regional and constituency executives, as well as members of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON).
