NPP to elect flag bearer on Jan. 31, 2026 - National delegates conference set for July 2025

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has fixed January 31, 2026 for the presidential primaries for 2028 election.

The party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is seen as a frontrunner but is expected to face former Assin Central Member of Parliament (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong; former MP for Essikado-Ketan, Joe Ghartey, and new entrant and MP for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong.

It is unclear how many more candidates will join the race, which is expected to be an intense political season for the opposition party as it charts its course towards the 2028 elections.

The decision to set the date for the election of the flag bearer for the 2028 general election was taken after the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party met on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

The upcoming primaries are seen as a pivotal moment for the party as it begins preparations for a potential return to government.

Briefing

The General Secretary of the party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, told the press after the meeting that the decision was subsequently endorsed by the party’s National Council.

He stated that the date for the primaries fell under the mandate of the National Council and therefore did not require further approval from the national delegates' conference.

He said the party would, in the coming weeks, issue detailed guidelines outlining nomination procedures, timelines for campaign activities and a code of conduct for all aspirants.

Mr Kodua assured the rank and file of the party that the process would be transparent, democratic and aligned with the values of the NPP.

Delegates conference

Ahead of the presidential primary, he said, a nine-member committee led by former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, had been constituted to oversee the planning of the party’s national delegates conference scheduled for July 2025.

It also has the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, serving as Vice Chair and other members as the Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib; the Greater Accra Chairman of the NPP, Divine Otoo Agorhon; the Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed; the former Deputy Finance Minister, Abena Osei Asare; the National Tresurer, Dr Charles Dwamena; the Deputy National Women’s Organiser, Safia Mohammed and National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha.

Mr Kodua said the conference, to be held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, was expected to consider and adopt several proposals for constitutional amendments within the party.

“Because there is going to be a proposal or motion for amendment of our constitution, a planning committee has been put in place,” he stated.

Proposals

He said the set of proposed constitutional amendments had been referred to the party’s National Council for further review.

The NPP’s Constitution Review Committee developed the proposals and would be scrutinised by the National Council before being forwarded to a National Delegates Conference for final approval.
