The Electoral Commission (EC) has described the late Defence Minister, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, as an active and dedicated member of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).
It said Dr Omane Boamah was well-known for his vocal contributions during IPAC meetings.
“He was committed to strengthening Ghana's democratic and electoral processes,” a statement signed by the Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa said, adding that “his absence at our meetings will be felt.”
Context
Dr Omane Boamah, who tragically lost his life alongside seven other citizens in a helicopter accident last Wednesday, was the Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The other deceased persons were the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; the acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Lumuna; a National Vice-Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Sarpong, and a parliamentary candidate and Deputy Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation, Samuel Aboagye.
The servicemen are Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, the pilot on the helicopter; Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, co-pilot and Sergeant Ernest Addo-Mensah, a crew member.
Omane Boamah and 2024 election
In the run-up to the December 7, 2024, election, Dr Omane Boamah called for the release of the voters’ register to political parties.
He also urged the EC to allow live coverage of an IPAC meeting on October 1, 2024, to promote transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
That, he said, helps to build trust in the preparations for the 2024 election and gives citizens a clearer understanding of the decisions that will shape the electoral landscape.
His call to wear and activate body cameras during the election generated furore in political cycles.
Tragic passing
The statement said the EC received with shock and dismay the news of the tragic passing away of Dr Omane Boamah, a valued member of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the government, the bereaved families and the people of Ghana.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” it stated.
