Successful transition reflects resilience of country’s democracy — NPC
The National Peace Council (NPC) has stated that the peaceful transition of the political leadership last Tuesday reflects the resilience of Ghana’s democracy.
It also said it makes the country stand out as a beacon of hope and inspiration for the region and beyond.
It commended the citizenry for their unwavering commitment to peace, particularly during the election period.
This was contained in a congratulatory message to President John Dramani Mahama, Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Speaker of Parliament,Alban Sumana
Kingsford Bagbin; the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor; the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako and all Members of Parliament of the ninth Parliament.
“As you all turn your hands to the significant responsibility of governing, we wish you the best in the years ahead,” it said.
Work together
It said the NPC remained steadfast in its belief that such milestones were only possible when citizens, political actors and institutions worked together to uphold the principles
of tolerance, respect and unity.
“This inauguration marks the culmination of months of dedication and collaboration by all stakeholders to ensure that Ghana continues to be a model for peaceful elections and transition of democratic power in Africa,” the statement noted.
It commended all stakeholders for their trust in dialogue and peace, “even in our most challenging moments” and reiterated its “call for due process to be followed to bring the outstanding
constituency electoral processes to a just conclusion.”
Challenges
The statement called for continued collaboration among all political actors and citizens to address the challenges facing the nation.
“We reiterate our commitment to fostering dialogue and conflict prevention mechanisms to ensure sustainable peace,” it concluded.
