TMA elects new Presiding Member
The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has elected Joseph Kojo Ofori of the Sealight Electoral Area, Tema Manhean, as its new Presiding Member, succeeding Felix Fauchie Sobre, who has completed his tenure.
Two nominations were initially received for the position: Mr Ofori and Lasisi Baba Tunde, Assembly member for the Horticulture Electoral Area.
Mr Tunde, however, withdrew, paving the way for a yes-or-no vote supervised by the Tema Metropolitan Office of the Electoral Commission, led by Director Manasseh Ofosuhene Asante, last Wednesday, 2026.
Mr Ofori received unanimous support, with all 31 votes cast in his favour, surpassing the two-thirds majority of 23 votes required.
Priorities
Speaking after his election, Mr Ofori outlined his priorities for the assembly, including enhancing the Assembly Members Development Fund, using electronic tools for assembly members to improve efficiency, and organising capacity-building programmes for members.
He also emphasised the need to address sanitation challenges in the Tema Metropolis, particularly in the densely populated neighbourhoods of Tema Manhean, through public engagement and strategic management of refuse.
Results orientated
The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema, Ebi Bright, praised the outgoing presiding member for his leadership, noting that his calm, inclusive, and purpose-driven approach helped in dealing with issues affecting the assembly.
“That is a tall order for the incoming PM to meet. So apart from our other expectations, I want to tell you that this is the barest minimum that we expect from you," she said
