Volta NDC defends Foreign Minister amid calls for dismissal

The Volta Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has defended Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, against calls for his dismissal by the Minority in Parliament.

The controversy surrounds recent developments in international migration and United States visa policies, which have affected Ghanaians. The Minority in Parliament has demanded

Mr Ablakwa's dismissal, citing the government's failure to protect Ghanaian interests.

Misguided

A statement signed and issued by the Volta Regional Chairman of the NDC, Mawutor Agbavitor, described the calls as "misguided, poorly informed, and disconnected from prevailing global diplomatic realities.

The statement emphasised that global debates on immigration and welfare access were not unique to Ghana-US relations.

"Governments across the world are reassessing immigration frameworks in response to domestic economic pressures and evolving public policy concerns," it said.

It pointed out that the US has imposed stricter immigration measures on several countries, including Barbados, Brazil, and Nigeria, and questioned the fairness of singling out Ghana's Foreign Minister.

Achievements

The statement highlighted Mr Ablakwa's achievements, including establishing seven new passport application centres, launching same-day passport delivery, and securing a $60 million grant from China.

The Volta NDC urged Ghanaians to assess the matter within its proper global context and disregard attempts to politicise complex foreign policy issues.

"Ghana's foreign policy remains guided by facts, diplomacy, mutual respect, and the national interest, and will continue to be pursued with professionalism and responsibility," the statement concluded.
