Inability of women to contest assembly polls worrying
The La Nkwantanan Madina District Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr Owusu Ansah, has expressed worry about the inability of women to contest assembly elections in the district.
At a forum organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) at La Nkwantan in the district, he said no woman in the district had contested for the position since the inception of the district assembly system.

Mr Ansah said the time had come for women in the area to mobilise themselves to compete with their male counterparts to influence the development of their communities.
He mentioned that the NCCE had educated the people on who eligible voters were, exhibition of voters register, filing of nomination and the election of the assembly and unit committee members.
The Greater Accra Regional Director of the NCCE, Mrs Lucille Annan, commended the chiefs and people of the area for their commitment and readiness to be educated on their rights and responsibilities as the electorate.
She, however, expressed her disappointment about the inability of some prospective assembly members to attend the forum.
Mrs Annan further advocated that chiefs and men in the district should support their wives and women to contest the local elections.
She also advised the aspirants to focus on the service they would render to the communities they would serve.

"No assembly member is expected to work in isolation but rather collaborate with Unit Committee members and opinion leaders to advance development to the area," she added.
She commended the European Union for their financial and moral support for the development of local governance.
