James Owusu announces bid to lead NPP-USA as Branch Chairman

The New Patriotic Party's external branch in the United States is bracing for a leadership contest that promises to reshape its operations, as the incumbent First Vice Chairman officially throws his hat into the ring for the top job.

James Owusu, who has served as the Branch First Vice Chairman of NPP-USA, yesterday declared his candidacy for the position of Branch Chairman, presenting himself to party faithful as a unifier with a track record stretching back more than two decades. In an announcement that leaned heavily on themes of service and renewal, Owusu positioned his bid as a natural progression of a lifelong commitment to the party's ideals.

"In moments when our great Party stands at the crossroads of renewal and responsibility, true leadership is not a title, it is a call to service," Owusu said in a statement. "It is in this spirit, with profound humility and an unyielding love for the New Patriotic Party, that I, James Owusu, officially declare my candidacy for Branch Chairman of NPP–USA."

He traces his activism back to his days as TESCON P.R.O at Kumasi Technical University, a formative period that laid the groundwork for a transatlantic political journey. From there, he served as Branch Youth Organizer before his election as Chapter Chairman of Cincinnati, roles that eventually culminated in his current position as the branch's First Vice Chairman.

Reflecting on this trajectory, Owusu sought to remind members that his understanding of the party's challenges is rooted in lived experience rather than abstract ambition.

"For over two decades, I have walked this journey of service with you – from my early beginnings as the TESCON P.R.O at Kumasi Technical University, Branch Youth Organizer, through my years as Chapter Chairman of Cincinnati, and now to my current role as the Branch First Vice Chairman of NPP–USA," he recounted. "Through each phase, I have learned that our greatest strength as a Party is not in titles or positions, but in the bond of brotherhood and sisterhood that unites us."

Owusu made it clear that his decision to seek the chairmanship is animated by the everyday commitment of ordinary members. "I have witnessed the sacrifices of our members – those who give their time, their resources, and their hearts all for the dream of a prosperous Ghana led by the NPP," he said. "It is for these patriots that I stand today. My motivation is simple: To Serve, To Unite, and To Empower."

His campaign, branded around the hashtags #Owusu4Chairman and #StrongerNPPUSA, arrives at a pivotal moment for the party both at home and abroad.

Domestically, the NPP has just concluded its presidential primaries, which saw Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerge victorious. The focus now shifts to rebuilding and consolidating party structures ahead of the general election. Within this context, the leadership of external branches like NPP-USA takes on added significance, serving as both fundraising hubs and ambassadors for the party's message.

Owusu's agenda for the branch, which he has branded "The Heartbeat of The James Owusu's Agenda", rests on several pillars. He has promised a comprehensive manifesto in the coming days, but has already sketched out the broad strokes of his vision. Key among his priorities are membership welfare and empowerment, which he frames as placing "people at the centre of everything we do, ensuring that every member matters and benefits from belonging to NPP–USA." He also intends to champion unity, discipline, and internal democracy, ensuring that "every voice is heard and respected."

Under the banner of financial sustainability and transparency, Owusu has committed to "promoting prudent management, openness, and trust in our operations." This is paired with a push for digital transformation and modernisation, aimed at building "a smart, connected, and tech-driven NPP–USA that meets the demands of our time."

The aspirant has also signalled his intention to forge strategic partnerships with national structures, other external branches, and allied institutions, a move designed to expand the branch's political relevance and influence. Perhaps most significantly, he has pledged to create pathways for youth and women's empowerment through leadership, mentorship, and innovation. This aspect of his agenda he encapsulates in the phrase "Obiaa wom bi", a Twi expression meaning "no one is left behind."

Rounding off his proposed reforms is a commitment to accountability, integrity, and good governance, pledging to hold himself and his team "to the highest standards of ethics and service."

"NPP–USA is not just a political branch, it is a family, a movement, and a legacy – a reflection of the values that make the NPP a Party of hope and progress," he said.

In a direct appeal to the membership, he concluded: "I humbly ask for your support, your ideas, and your trust. Let us rise together – united in purpose, guided by principle, and driven by a shared commitment to victory. James Owusu is here to Serve! James Owusu is here to Unite!! James Owusu is here to Empower!!! Together, we win. Together, we build. Together, we serve."
