MP for Okaikoi South wins landslide victory

The withdrawal letter of the former legal advisor to ex-President John Kufuor and an aspiring Member of Parliament (MP) for the Okaikoi South Constituency, Ms Vicky Bright, did not change anything as the Electoral Commission refused to accept it because it came too late.

The withdrawal letter reached the Electoral Commission at 10 a.m. yesterday when voting was underway.

Incumbent

When polls ended at 5 p.m. on Sunday and the votes were counted, Vicky Bright polled 29 votes to succumb to her main contender, Mr Ahmed Arthur, the incumbent MP, who polled 605 votes to retain the ticket of the party to contest the 2016 parliamentary election.

Madam Bright had accused Mr Arthur of fraud and that she would not contest him.

Similar to the controversies in the Korle Klottey Constituency, whose primary was also scheduled for yesterday, Madam Bright said Arthur had forged his certificate from the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

Appeals committee

At a press conference last Saturday, just a day to the primary, Vicky Bright said she could not be part of a fraudulent process.

She petitioned the party to disqualify the incumbent MP for forging his certificate from GIJ, an action that led to the postponement of the primary in the Okaikoi South Constituency.

But the party's appeals committee threw out the petition and set Sunday for the election.

She outlined a number of issues, including the absence of notification to her for the primary.

"As a candidate, I received no formal notification of any such election involving myself. Due to the shortness of time, I do not see how statistically or physically I am expected to make myself available in less than 48 hours given the magnitude of the controversies, including organising effective security for myself and my supporters on Sunday," she said.

She also called on Ghanaians to "take notice that a forger of his own certificate has no place today or tomorrow to sit and make laws for all of us when he himself is a law breaker.

"I am a lawyer. I respect the law. I obey the law. I respect my people. I cannot associate myself with law breakers, especially for a revered organ of state such as Parliament," she said.
