NALAG elects leaders today

The President of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), Mr Ebenezer Akuoko-Frimpong, has appealed to members of the group to renew his mandate to serve another two-year term when they convene today for their  national delegates’ conference  in Sunyani.

He said that he had an unfinished business to accomplish for the association, and that when re-elected, he would regain the confidence and support of development partners and collaborators of NALAG, who had expressed concern about the short tenure of the executive and, therefore, called for a constitutional amendment to address the issue.

A total of 1,080 delegates of  NALAG should have attended the biennial 18th national delegates’ conference in the Brong Ahafo Regional capital, Sunyani from Wednesday, October 23 to Friday, October 26, 2013 on the theme, ‘‘Energising Local Economies: Partnerships for Accelerated Development at the Local Level.’’

However, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the association postponed the meeting to Tuesday, November 12, through, Friday, November 15, 2013 at the same venue.

The NEC cited a strike action embarked upon by members of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) as one major reason why the three-day meeting could not come off as planned since some key staff of the various assemblies could not be available.

Mr Akuoko-Frimpong, who is also the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sekyere Central in the Ashanti Region, told the Daily Graphic in an interview at Asante-Mampong that, since assuming office as president of the association in October 2011 to date, he had distinguished himself and exhibited fine leadership qualities.

He indicated that his achievements so far were proof that he was competent and that his sacrifices should, therefore, be appreciated and honoured. He added that he had succeeded in sourcing for funding from GIZ to amend the NALAG constitution to be in consonance with global best practices which had already been carried through.

He said his objectives included the visibility and relevance of NALAG in both national and international spheres to source more linkages and collaborations for the association and use NALAG as a platform to protect the rights, privileges and interests of all members while his vision was to infuse dynamism into NALAG, strengthen its profile and champion its cause to enviable heights.
