'Nana Addo not consulted about Gitmo detainees'

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, has denied reports that the government consulted him before accepting to host the two former Guantanamo detainees.

A ‘Security Analyst’, Irbard Ibrahim, alleged on Monday that the US consulted Nana  Addo six months about the decision to resettle the ex-detainees in Ghana.

“I can say for a fact that Nana Akufo-Addo was duly informed six clear months before the GITMO detainees touched down.

“He was informed by the Americans,” Mr Ibrahim claimed, adding: “There was broad-based consultation. We should look at this from the national issue. There is no cause for alarm, let’s have faith in our security.”

The claim has, however, been denied by his spokesperson, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, who described it as a “blatant lie”.

Mr Adul-Hamid said: “It’s a blatant lie, it’s a fabrication, it’s a falsehood, it’s a rule calculated to claw back some legitimacy for a decision that clearly is unpopular in the eyes of Ghanaian.

“The Minister of Foreign Affairs all this while has been trying to say that this is an Executive President and therefore the President needn’t have consulted anybody at all before taking the decision that we took. So how do you reconcile that argument with a new argument in the public domain that Nana Addo was consulted.”
