‘NDC delegates cautioned not to elect moles tomorrow’

A former Brong Ahafo Regional Minister and Ghana’s Ambassador to Algeria, Mr Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo, has cautioned delegates who would elect regional National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives tomorrow to be cautious of their choices to avoid electing “moles” who will rather serve the interest of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He said already, the Ashanti regional chairman of the NPP was on record to have given a hint that the NPP would infiltrate into the NDC’s regional elections to ensure that candidates who were sympathetic to its (NPP) cause were elected.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, Mr Nyamekye-Marfo, who is the sole candidate for the regional chairmanship, called on the delegates to properly assess candidates vying for the various positions to know those who could do the work before casting their votes.

“Let us be calm and very cautious as we go to the polls so that we can elect people who have the interest of the party and not moles who will serve the interest of the NPP,” he stated.

Mr Nyamekye-Marfo, who is the current Regional Vice Chairman of the party, has tremendous experience in politics in the region having also served as the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) during the Rawlings administration and the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) District Secretary for the Jaman District, as well as the Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinator of the Committee for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR), before the country was ushered into the Fourth Republic in January 1993.

Regional election

The party’s incumbent Regional Secretary, Mr Dennis Yeboah Twumasi, will also have a field day during the election because nobody filed to challenge his re-election bid on Saturday.

However, three people, a football administrator and current Regional Youth Organiser of the party, Mr Kwadwo Takyi-Arhin; a transport officer, Nasiru Yusifu Farafara, and a businessman, Ibrahim Gariba, have been cleared to contest the regional vice chairman position.

For the position of deputy regional secretary, Mr Mohammed Shamsudeen, Isaac Donkor and Mohammed Abdul will slug it out while Akwasi Lampo and Prince Opoku-Mensah are challenging the incumbent Regional Organiser, Mohammed Seidu, for his long-held position.

The deputy regional organiser position is being contested by Charles Asiedu, Abdul Fatau Abass and Gabriel Kwarteng while Gapson Kofi Raphael and Joseph Abonkra Manu are vying for the regional treasurer slot.

While a former Member of Parliament for Tano South, Madam Grace Boakye, Agnes Kusi and Ms Florence Anning are contesting the regional women’s organiser position, five others - Debora Narh, Fati Abubakar, Ntene Ayisha, Evelyn Adarkwah-Prempeh, Felicity Amponsah and Georgina Puopiel — are vying for the deputy regional women’s organiser position.

Other positions

Four people— Thomas Warlanyo Tsekpo, Sulemana Alhasan, Bilal Aauzu Sulemana and Ayaaba — are contesting the regional youth organiser slot, with eight others: Nicholas Saddari, Gilbert Nondo Gbolo, Nasir Nuhu Azura, Obeng Agyenim Boateng, Moses Kofi Woli, Owusu Ababio Nkrumah, Rasheed Ahmed and Eric Yaw Amponsah contesting the deputy regional youth organiser position.

The deputy regional treasurer position is being contested by Ayomah Moro, Peter Suaka Lonyian and Magyina Kwasi, while the regional communications officer position is a contest among Apraku Lartey, Moro Zorngo and Charles Akowua Tuffuor.

Eric Adjei and Amadu Eben Awulai are contesting the deputy regional communications officer position while Alhaji Baba Awudu Gausu is the sole candidate for the regional Zongo caucus coordinator slot.

In all, 46 people are contesting the 15 positions at stake.
