VIDEO: Fifi Kwetey on NDC members trying to cut deals with corruption suspects

The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has urged the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice to be strong and firm in prosecuting cases involving persons suspected of having engaged in corrupt acts.

“Continue to be firm with your team in the prosecution of individuals before the courts for alleged corruption-related offences to get a favourable conviction to serve as a deterrent to others”, he stressed.

Mr Kwetey cautioned that the prosecution of such cases cannot be rushed just because the party is in a hurry, saying “we have to make sure that prosecution is done rightfully by not allowing anybody to subvert the legal process”.

Conference

Mr Kwetey made the remarks while addressing the fifth annual NDC Lawyers Conference in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region last Saturday, September 6, 2025.

The three-day conference was on the theme: “Government reset agenda: The role of the NDC Lawyer.

Cut deals

He used the occasion to warn some party members to stop trying to cut deals to protect people who should be prosecuted and urged them to desist from such acts.

“We at the party level are picking up signals that some people among us are trying to cut deals with people who are supposed to be prosecuted. Some are becoming conduits through whom pressure is being brought to bear on people who are supposed to do what is right,” he stressed.

He said this was happening despite the pleas and pressure from the public that things had to be done properly and punishment must be exacted against alleged corrupt officials.

Emphatic victory

Without mentioning names, he said a time may come when they would be forced to mention names, saying, “Some already know themselves, and we are hearing their names as well, so they should think again”, he stated.

He stated that the party’s overwhelming and emphatic victory in the 2024 election was achieved mainly because the people of Ghana wanted the right things to be done afterwards and not for deals to be cut.

Significant contribution

The National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, commended the lawyers for their contributions before, during and after the 2024 general election and said, “I am convinced that you actually contributed significantly to the massive victory of the NDC in the last election.

He acknowledged that the formation of the NDC Lawyers Association and the NDC Professionals Forum has helped to erase the impression that the NDC was not a party of choice for intellectuals.

He charged them to monitor the performance of state institutions and offer constructive criticisms about how they are performing and said, “In doing so, we can contribute to resetting and strengthening state institutions”.

Indispensable

For his part, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, said the reset agenda is a deliberate recalibration of governance to improve the people's lives, realign state institutions with constitutional purpose and restore faith in democracy.

In all this, he said the role of NDC Lawyers was indispensable towards rebuilding the state on the foundations of integrity, constitutionalism and competence, stressing “NDC Lawyers must serve as both the conscience and architects of this process”.

“We must help design systems that shun arbitrariness and open the way to transparency, accountability and fairness”, he told the lawyers.
