The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Kofi Portuphy, has said Ghana’s democratic achievements were not attained by chance.

He explained that the high democratic credentials were attained as a result of a long struggle spearheaded by the youth in the country.

Mr Portuphy was addressing a conference of the African Committee of the International Union of Socialist Youth in Accra yesterday under the auspices of the NDC Youth Wing.

The three-day international conference, which attracted more than 50 participants from eight African countries, was aimed at discussing socio-political and economic issues affecting the youth on the continent and the role of governments in promoting youth programmes.

Some of the countries attending the conference on the theme: “Democracy and Human Rights,” are South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Sahrawi Arab Republic and Benin.

According to Mr Portuphy, Ghana had over the years worked hard to gain its current democracy and it was vital to maintain such democratic right.

Social integration

He, therefore, asked the youth on the continent to not hesitate to be the mouthpiece for promoting social integration and human rights.

He said it was important for the youth to assist in the fight against human rights abuses and to show sincerity to the cause of humanity.

Good governance

Touching on good governance, Mr Portuphy said the best form of good governance was one which was transformational in terms of the best development outcomes for the majority in the society.

He said most citizens in the West African sub-region valued constitutionalist politics even if they were losing faith in the leadership.

Mr Portuphy said good governance should facilitate the democratic participation of all, especially the youth, by engaging them in political debate and political association.

“We should stand firm and support the struggle of building strong democratic structures that cherish good governance and respect the right of the people,” he added.

Introspection

The National Youth Organiser of the NDC, Mr Sidii Abubakar Musah, told the participants that the three-day conference should give them the opportunity to do serious introspection to address some of the challenges confronting socialist parties across the globe.

He further said the conference would give them the mandate to tackle issues concerning human right abuse in the various countries.
