Party supporters vandalise EC office to disrupt collation of Ablekuma North parliamentary results

Some political party supporters on Friday morning vandalised the Greater-Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) to disrupt the outstanding collation process in the Ablekuma North parliamentary election.

Officials of the EC and party agents had met to continue with the exercise, which has been outstanding since December 7, 2024 due to disagreements over some polling station results.

The supporters, unhappy with the exercise, stormed the EC officers and disrupted the process by vandalising the place.

The windows made of louvre blades especially, and other materials in the various offices of the EC were vandalised by the party supporters.

The party supporters stormed the building at about an hour and half past the time for the scheduled completion of the collation amidst threats.

Some of them were heard saying, “if you don’t leave and you video us we will kill you”.

Security personnel deployed to the EC Office had left following an indication that the collation exercise will not continue.

The few security personnel including the police and the military were outnumbered and could not intervene as the party supporters stormed and vandalised some offices of the Greater-Accra Regional Office.

The party supporters who were still furious after the vandalism hinted that they were heading to the EC Head Office.

No arrests were made on the part of the security as they watched the party supporters exit the premises of the Greater Accra Regional Office.

Collation

With 281 polling station results to be collated, 278 polling stations were have already been collated with three still outstanding.

It had been scheduled to be completed Friday (January 16, 2025).

The parliamentary contest between the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP), Akua Afriyie and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC), Ewurabena Aubrey has consistently suffered setbacks.

The collation of the results has been truncated at least three times over issues of inability of the EC to authenticate the pink sheets coupled with some Presiding Officers disagreeing with some pink sheets produced by the EC and political parties, citing changes, inconsistency in figures on the pink sheets.

The Returning Officer of the Ablekuma North Constituency had at the last exercise declared that, he would not return for the process.
