Northern Regional Minister-designate outlines vision for development

The Northern Regional Minister-designate, Alhaji Ali Adolf G. John has shared his plans for the region's growth, with an emphasis on empowering local communities and boosting agricultural productivity.

In his vetting before the parliamentary committee, Alhaji Ali outlined a vision focused on creating opportunities within the region to prevent youth migration to Accra in search of work.

"We must decentralise economic opportunities. We should not allow Accra to remain the focal point of growth," said Alhaji Ali.

He pointed out that many young people migrate out of necessity, not choice, and emphasised the need for mechanisms that will encourage them to stay and thrive in the northern regions.

Central to Alhaji Ali's strategy is the development of agriculture, a key economic pillar for the region.

He confirmed plans to establish mechanisation centres across all districts, aimed at improving farming practices and boosting productivity.

"I will ensure the government's policies are properly implemented, ensuring each district benefits," Alhaji Ali added.

He stressed that agriculture, if properly supported, could generate sustainable jobs and improve the livelihoods of many in the region.

In addition to agricultural development, Alhaji Ali praised the ongoing 'Kayayei' Empowerment Programme, which provides young women, particularly head porters, with skills training and economic opportunities.

"This program resonates with me because it addresses the challenges faced by marginalised women," he said.

The initiative, which aims at empowering 5,000 participants in Accra, offers training in areas such as baking, beading, financial management, and entrepreneurship.

Regarding governance, the nominee reaffirmed his commitment to continuity, stating, "If a policy is beneficial for Ghanaians, we should not discard it."

However, he also stressed that policies would be reviewed to ensure they align with the government's priorities and effectively serve the people of the region.

Alhaji Ali also addressed the challenges of water availability and post-harvest losses, which continue to hinder agricultural productivity in the north.

He underscored the need for irrigation systems, "By investing in irrigation dams, we can increase harvests and create more opportunities for farmers," he explained.

While some members of the vetting committee raised concerns about the nominee's plans for post-harvest management and infrastructure development, particularly roads for transporting crops, the nominee reassured them that his priorities would span multiple sectors.

"The Northern region is underdeveloped, but I will ensure all sectors, not just agriculture, are addressed," he said.

On social issues, he acknowledged the sensitive matter of witchcraft camps in the region.

While recognising the challenges in reintegrating individuals from these camps, he committed to collaborating with local traditional leaders to find solutions. "We will work with traditional authorities and the government to close these camps and support affected individuals," he assured.
