NPP decries poor patronage of voters register exhibition

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has observed with deep disquiet and concern the general low turnout at the ongoing voters register exhibition exercise.

It said any exercise of this magnitude and importance necessarily ought to have been preceded by wide consultations with political parties and other stakeholders.

These were contained in a statement, signed by the General Secretary, Mr Kwabena Agyepong.

Lack of consultation

It expressed the party’s belief that the inability of the EC to properly involve all stakeholders accounted for the low level of public awareness and participation in this important exercise.

The statement said, regrettably, the NPP received the registers days after the exercise began.

The nature and form in which these registers were delivered required time to get same to our officers at the polling centers”, it stated.

According to the statement, reports from some exhibition centres across the country also confirmed low patronage, coupled with many challenges and shortcomings such as the distortion and deletion of particulars of voters and several other errors.

IPAC meeting

If therefore, called on the EC to, as a matter of urgency, convene an Inter Party Advisory Committee meeting to deliberate on these matters.

The statement also called on all voters and the general public to take a keen interest in the exercise and added that they should endeavour to visit the various exhibition centres to check their details or to report the death of persons on the register, report on the inclusion of minors, foreigners and all persons unqualified to be on the voters roll.

It, particularly, asked for the assistance of local chiefs and opinion leaders to assist and volunteer information on these matters.

Remaining days

The statement stated that in the spirit of volunteerism, selflessness and sacrifice, which were key attributes of the NPP, the party directed all executive members, especially at the polling station level, to ensure that they monitored the exercise for the remaining days, adhering strictly to the operational directives which had been issued earlier.

It concluded that the party remained grateful to all its gallant executive members who continued to sacrifice in the interest of the party and country.
