NPP opts out of Tamale Central by-election in bid to promote national unity

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has decided against fielding a candidate in the Tamale Central parliamentary by-election, a move aimed at fostering national cohesion following the tragic death of the constituency's MP, Alhaji Dr Murtala Mohammed.

The late legislator was among eight individuals who perished in a helicopter crash on August 6 while on official duty.

In an official communiqué dated August 11, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong disclosed that the party’s National Steering Committee reached the resolution during a meeting at its headquarters. The decision aligns with Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP’s constitution.

The party cited the sensitive nature of the vacancy and concerns over deepening political divisions as key factors. “The circumstances under which the Tamale Central seat has become vacant and the possibility of further polarisation of the country at this critical time informed our stance,” the statement read.

Describing a competitive by-election as “inhumane and unconscionable” under the circumstances, the NPP emphasised the need to avoid the discord often associated with such contests.

Instead, it called for solidarity, stating that honouring the deceased should transcend partisan politics.

“The greatest tribute we can pay is not only to intensify the fight against galamsey but also to ensure a peaceful transition for Tamale Central,” the party asserted.

The NPP confirmed it would abstain from the electoral process once the Electoral Commission opens nominations, as stipulated under Article 112(5) of Ghana’s constitution. The move sets a precedent for political restraint during periods of national mourning.
